Weight of aircraft is an important factor that determines the efficiency of the aircraft. A reduction in structure weight has a significant impact on fuel burn, since it means that less weight has to be carried to an altitude of 12,000 meters over the entire trip distance. This directly leads to a lower fuel consumption, which subsequently triggers a second round of fuel savings. Eventually this could lead to lower weight, smaller engine, smaller wings and a shorter landing gear.
