Boeing and Iran Air have reached an agreement for the purchase of 80 Boeing aircraft. The deal has been in the works for months and faced opposition from lawmakers as they feared that Iran would misuse the aircraft.
While the initial order suggested that up to 109 aircraft would be part of the deal (including the lease of some narrow body jets), the first deal with Iran Air does not include the Boeing 747-8I or the lease of 29 Boeing 737NG jets.
Having reached a deal with Iran is important to Boeing as it includes the Boeing 777-300ER, which desperately needs order inflow as it transitions towards Boeing 777X production in the coming years. Additionally, the deal is likely the biggest order Boeing will receive this year.
Boeing has emphasized the importance of the deal stating that the $16.6B order supports nearly 100,000 US jobs.
