German airline Lufthansa has started the phase out of its Airbus A340-600 fleet.
Lufthansa started phase out
With the phase out of the D-AIHR was withdrawn from service in December 2016 and was stored at Marana – Pinal Airpark on the 24th of January. A second aircraft, registered D-AIHM, was removed from service in November 2016 and was flown to storage on the 31st of January.
The two phase outs mark the start of the removal of the Airbus A340-600 phase out of which Lufthansa has 22 left in service. The aircraft are being replaced by the Airbus A350-900 of which Lufthansa ordered a total of 25 aircraft of which one has been delivered to the carrier.
The aircraft that have been retired average slightly above 10 years, far from the end of their economic life but have been rendered obsolete by more cost efficient alternatives.
