09 Jan Schiphol Celebrates Centennial With Records
Schiphol Airport has celebrated its centennial with record passenger traffic. Based on preliminary figure, the airport processed over 4.8 million passengers in December totalling over 63 million passengers for the year.
Schiphol: From 440 to 63.6 million passengers
Schiphol Airport was established as a military airfield in 1916 and started transporting passengers 4 years later in 1920. In 96 years the airport grew from 440 passengers in 1920 to 63.6 million passengers in 2016, becoming one of the most important pillars of the Dutch economy and one of the busiests airports in the world. In the past 96 the airport grew at a rate of 13% per annum.
In December, the Dutch airport processed 4.8 million passengers totalling the number of passengers carried to 63.6 million passengers, a growth of 9% year-over-year. The number of air transport movements grew to a record of 4790,000 for the entire year.
