Delta Air Lines has cancelled its order for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The order had been in doubt since Delta preferred the Airbus counterparts.

Delta Air Lines chooses for Airbus

In 2005 Northwest Airlines selected the Boeing 787-8 to strengthen its fleet. In 2008, Delta and Northwest Airlines merged and Delta inherited the order.

In 2010, Delta Air Lines deferred the order for 18 Boeing 787-8s to 2020-2022 and proceeded to order the Airbus A350 and the Airbus A330neo 4 years later. If the Dreamliner order was not in doubt before, it certainly was after Delta selected Airbus to manufacturer its new wide body aircraft.

Today’s cancellation was widely anticipated and it was only a matter of time before the order Delta once inherited from Northwest would be officially cancelled.
